I used to love those almond ring butter cookies when I was a child—baking them with Mum is one of my fondest memories. Since ovens were rare back then in Malacca, Mum would rent huge tin trays from the mamak bakery shop. Those clay ovens were enormous—we joked you could almost bake a person in there! I’d help carry the trays back and forth and keep watch while the almond rings baked to golden, buttery perfection.
